Boss
The boss is the raised central knob of a shield. It appears once in scripture, in Eliphaz's description of a defiant attacker.
The Boss of a Shield
In Eliphaz's second speech, the wicked man is pictured charging God like a soldier in a reckless rush:
He runs on him with a [stiff] neck, With the thick bosses of his bucklers; (Job 15:26)
The image is of an aggressor lowering his shielded arm and driving forward — neck rigid, the heavy raised centers of his bucklers leading the charge. The boss is named not as a thing in itself but as the leading edge of human presumption hurled against God.
