Boxing

Topics · Updated 2026-05-07

Boxing appears in scripture only as a figure for purposeful effort. The image is the trained pugilist who lands his blows, set against the man who flails at empty air.

A Figure of Purposeful Effort

Paul places his own fight alongside his footrace as images of disciplined striving: "I therefore so run, as not uncertainly; so I fight, not as beating the air" (1 Cor 9:26). The contrast turns on the misdirected blow. To beat the air is to throw a punch that meets no resistance — an unaimed swing falling into empty space. The apostle's fighting is the opposite: aimed, connected, intentional. Boxing here serves as a figure for the difference between wasted exertion and trained effort that finds its target.
