Brothel in the older English translation tradition renders the Hebrew term for a high place — the elevated worship site whose licentious practices fused idolatrous worship with ritual prostitution, repeatedly attacked by reforming kings such as Asa, Jehoshaphat, Hezekiah, and Josiah.
