Bukki

People · Updated 2026-05-04

Bukki is the name borne by two distinct figures in the UPDV: a tribal leader appointed at the wilderness allotment, and a priest in the Aaronic line whose name recurs in the genealogies that link Aaron to the post-exilic priesthood.

Prince of the Tribe of Dan

When Yahweh names the chiefs who are to apportion the land for the tribes, the representative for Dan is Bukki the son of Jogli: "And of the tribe of the sons of Dan a prince, Bukki the son of Jogli" (Num 34:22). His role is administrative, attached to the tribal allotment and not extended elsewhere in the surviving narrative.

Bukki in the Aaronic Line

A second Bukki belongs to the high-priestly genealogy descending from Aaron. The Chronicler places him between Abishua and Uzzi: "and Abishua begot Bukki, and Bukki begot Uzzi" (1Ch 6:5). The same sequence is repeated a few verses later in the priestly list that traces the line forward to the temple service: "Bukki his son, Uzzi his son, Zerahiah his son" (1Ch 6:51).

The line is picked up again in Ezra's own genealogy, where the chain is traced backward from Ezra through Zerahiah, Uzzi, and Bukki on its way to Aaron: "the son of Zerahiah, the son of Uzzi, the son of Bukki" (Ezr 7:4). Across these three notices Bukki occupies a fixed position — son of Abishua, father of Uzzi — anchoring the priestly succession at the same point each time it is rehearsed.
