Bunni

People · Updated 2026-05-06

The name Bunni surfaces three times in Nehemiah, attached to three different figures or family lines among the post-exilic community: a Levite who joins Ezra in the public confession, a more distant ancestor in the Levite Shemaiah's genealogy, and a family head who seals the covenant.

A Levite at the public confession

When the returned community gathers in mourning after the reading of the law, the Levites take the stairs to lead the congregation in prayer. Bunni stands among them: "Then stood up on the stairs of the Levites, Jeshua, and Bani, Kadmiel, Shebaniah, Bunni, Sherebiah, Bani, [and] Chenani, and cried with a loud voice to Yahweh their God" (Ne 9:4). The list places him in the front rank of those who lift the assembly's voice.

An ancestor in Shemaiah's line

A second Bunni stands as a forebear in the genealogy of the Levite Shemaiah, listed among those who settled at Jerusalem after the return: "And of the Levites: Shemaiah the son of Hasshub, the son of Azrikam, the son of Hashabiah, the son of Bunni;" (Ne 11:15). The name marks him as the deepest named ancestor in this Levite line.

A family head sealing the covenant

A third Bunni appears in the catalogue of family heads who put their seal on Nehemiah's covenant: "Bunni, Azgad, Bebai," (Ne 10:15). The name here represents a household, not a single signer, and stands among the lay families bound by the renewed pledge.
