Caphtor

Places · Updated 2026-05-07

Caphtor is the homeland from which the Caphtorim came. It surfaces in a parenthetical aside about earlier population displacements along the southwestern coastland.

Origin of the Caphtorim

In Moses's recap of how various peoples occupied the lands east and west of the route to Canaan, UPDV reads: "and the Avvim, who dwelt in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorim, who came forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.)" (De 2:23). Caphtor is named only as the place of origin for the Caphtorim, who displaced the Avvim from the villages reaching as far as Gaza and took their territory.
