People · Updated 2026-05-07

Carshena is a Persian noble named once in the book of Esther, listed among the inner circle of King Ahasuerus.

One of the Seven Princes

When Vashti refuses the king's summons, Ahasuerus turns to his closest counsellors for a ruling. Carshena heads the list: "and the next to him were Carshena, Shethar, Admatha, Tarshish, Meres, Marsena, and Memucan, the seven princes of Persia and Media, who saw the king's face, and sat first in the kingdom" (Es 1:14). The seven are described as those granted direct access to the king and the highest seats in the realm. No further word is recorded of Carshena beyond this single placement.
