Chalcedony
Chalcedony is a precious stone named once in scripture, set in the foundations of the New Jerusalem.
A Foundation Stone of the New Jerusalem
In John's vision of the city descending from heaven, the wall rests on twelve foundations adorned with twelve different gems. Chalcedony takes the third position: "The foundations of the wall of the city were adorned with all manner of precious stones. The first foundation was jasper; the second, sapphire; the third, chalcedony; the fourth, emerald" (Re 21:19). The stone is named only here in scripture; its sole role is as one of the layered jewels signifying the splendor of the heavenly city's structure.
