Chamois

The chamois is named once in scripture, in the catalog of clean wild animals permitted as food in Israel.

Among the Clean Wild Animals

Deuteronomy's enumeration of edible game closes with the chamois, set alongside six other wild ruminants: "the hart, and the gazelle, and the roebuck, and the wild goat, and the pygarg, and the antelope, and the chamois" (De 14:5). The verse places it within the broader category of beasts that part the hoof and chew the cud, and so are clean for the table.
