The older English word "champaign" — a flat, open country — is the heading under which a single locale beyond the Jordan is gathered. UPDV itself renders the underlying Hebrew with the geographic name Arabah.

The Arabah Across from Gilgal

The reference falls inside Moses' instructions about Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal, where the territory is identified by its position relative to known landmarks: "(Are they not beyond the Jordan, behind the way of the going down of the sun, in the land of the Canaanites who dwell in the Arabah, across from Gilgal, beside the oaks of Moreh?)" (De 11:30). The flat open country in view is the Arabah — the lowland rift west of the Jordan, oriented toward the sunset, marked off by Gilgal and the oaks of Moreh.
