Cheran

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Cheran is named once in the Edomite-Horite genealogy of Genesis and once again in its Chronicler parallel, in both cases as one of the sons of Dishon.

A son of Dishon among the Horites

In the catalog of Horite chiefs descended from Seir, Cheran appears at the end of a four-name list: "And these are the sons of Dishon: Hemdan and Eshban and Ithran and Cheran" (Genesis 36:26).

The same family in the Chronicler's list

The genealogy is repeated, with minor name-spelling variation, in the Chronicler's recapitulation of the early nations: "The sons of Anah: Dishon. And the sons of Dishon: Hamran, and Eshban, and Ithran, and Cheran" (1 Chronicles 1:41). Cheran's place at the end of the list is held in both passages; he has no further attestation outside this paired notice.
