Chesil
Chesil is a town in the southern hill country, listed among the cities allotted to the southern tribes. The same place appears under two parallel names — Bethul and Bethuel — in different lists, with the surrounding town-names confirming the identification.
In the Judahite list
Chesil is named in the Judahite town-list with Eltolad and Hormah: "and Eltolad, and Chesil, and Hormah," (Jos 15:30).
As Bethul in Simeon
In the Simeonite parallel — the same southern allotment — the middle name shifts to Bethul, but the flanking towns Eltolad and Hormah remain in place: "and Eltolad, and Bethul, and Hormah," (Jos 19:4). The triplet identifies the two lists as covering the same locality.
As Bethuel in Chronicles
In the Chronicler's record of the Simeonite settlements the name appears as Bethuel, again paired with Hormah: "and at Bethuel, and at Hormah, and at Ziklag," (1Ch 4:30). The three forms — Chesil, Bethul, Bethuel — converge on the same town in the south.
