Chileab

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Chileab is the second son born to David at Hebron, the child of Abigail the widow of Nabal the Carmelite. He appears only in two parallel genealogies of David's sons, and the two passages do not even agree on his name.

A son of David at Hebron

The Hebron birth list places Chileab between Amnon and Absalom: "and his second, Chileab, of Abigail the wife of Nabal the Carmelite; and the third, Absalom the son of Maacah the daughter of Talmai king of Geshur" (2 Samuel 3:3). The mother is identified by her former marriage — she had been Nabal's wife before David took her — and Chileab inherits no further narrative beyond this single notice.

Called Daniel

The Chronicler's parallel list renames him: "Now these were the sons of David, who were born to him in Hebron: the firstborn, Amnon, of Ahinoam the Jezreelitess; the second, Daniel, of Abigail the Carmelitess" (1 Chronicles 3:1). The slot — second son, Abigail of Carmel — is the same, but the name is Daniel rather than Chileab. The two notices preserve a double tradition for the same person without resolving which name was primary.
