Compassion in scripture is the moved-heart response to suffering that turns into action — the same disposition seen in God's mercy toward his people and in Jesus' visible pity for the sick, the grieving, and the lost. The two strands belong together: the Son's tenderness toward those he meets reflects and reveals the Father's mercy.
