Contrition

Contrition is the inward sorrow of heart for sin that turns the sinner back to God — the broken and crushed spirit that accompanies genuine repentance and finds outward expression in the confession of wrongdoing. Scripture treats this disposition as the condition God seeks rather than ritual performance, and as the inner movement that precedes restored fellowship with him.
