Crispus

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Crispus appears in the UPDV in a single verse — Paul's recollection in 1 Corinthians of the very small number of converts he himself baptized at Corinth.

One of Two Paul Baptized

The mention is brief and embedded in Paul's argument that the Corinthian factions cannot be traced to who performed their baptism: "I thank God that I baptized none of you⁺, except Crispus and Gaius" (1 Cor 1:14). The verse names two exceptions, with Crispus listed first. Paul's "I thank God" frames the limitation as deliberate — the small list, not a large one, is what makes his point in the surrounding argument that "Christ did not send me to baptize."

The umbrella collects only this single verse for Crispus in the UPDV. He is named once, set alongside Gaius, and identified by the only datum the verse supplies: that Paul personally baptized him at Corinth.
