Decision, Valley Of
The valley of decision is a place-name in Joel's day-of-Yahweh oracle, naming the floor on which the gathered nations stand awaiting verdict.
The Doubled Multitudes
Joel announces the scene with a doubled vocative and a grounding clause: "Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision! For the day of Yahweh is near in the valley of decision" (Joel 3:14).
The repeated noun marks the crowd as vast — so vast the cry must double — and the locative twice names the place by the judicial act it stages. The valley is identified not by topography but by what happens there: the verdict-pronouncement of Yahweh.
The Day of Yahweh
The grounding clause gives the place its urgency. The valley's name is keyed to the imminence of the day of Yahweh: the floor of the depression is where the gathered nations await the divine judgment-day. The valley of decision is, in the prophet's image, the divinely-curated decision-floor on which the multitudes stand under the near approach of that day.
