Demetrius

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Demetrius appears in scripture as a Christian commended by name in the Elder's third letter, set out as a man whose reputation is vouched for from three independent angles at once.

Commended in Three Witnesses

The Elder draws Demetrius out of the surrounding correspondence and pins his standing to a triple attestation: "Demetrius has the witness of all [men], and of the truth itself: yes, we also bear witness; and you know that our witness is true" (3 John 1:12). The construction layers the testimonies — the witness of all, the witness of the truth, and the Elder's own witness — and closes by reminding the reader that the Elder's witness is reliable. Demetrius is the named recipient of that combined commendation; the verse gives his entire biblical portrait.
