Despotism

Despotism is the abuse of monarchical power — a king ruling by his own will rather than under restraint, conscripting his subjects' labor, lands, and lives, and refusing to be accountable. Scripture documents the pattern in named instances under Saul, David, Solomon, Ahasuerus, Nebuchadnezzar, and Herod, and warns of it in Samuel's portrait of the king who will take and take until the people cry out.
