Dinhabah

Places · Updated 2026-05-06

Dinhabah is the city of Bela son of Beor, the first king named in the list of those who reigned in Edom before any king reigned over Israel. The place appears only as a parenthetical to the king-list, in two parallel rosters that agree word for word on the entry.

Bela's City in the Edomite King-List

Genesis introduces the king and his city in a single sentence: "And Bela the son of Beor reigned in Edom; and the name of his city was Dinhabah" (Gen 36:32). The Chronicler's parallel list opens the same king-list with the same entry and adds the framing note about Edom's pre-Israelite kingship: "Now these are the kings who reigned in the land of Edom, before any king reigned over the sons of Israel: Bela the son of Beor; and the name of his city was Dinhabah" (1 Chr 1:43). The two passages agree exactly on Dinhabah as Bela's seat at the head of the Edomite line.
