Earthenware refers to the fired-clay vessels of daily life in the biblical world — bowls, jars, lamps, and jugs shaped from prepared clay by treading and the potter's wheel. Scripture also reaches for clay's fragility as a figure of weakness, most strikingly in the iron-and-clay feet of Nebuchadnezzar's image.
