Elidad

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Elidad son of Chislon appears once in scripture, as the prince of the tribe of Benjamin appointed to oversee the division of the land of Canaan among Israel's tribes.

Prince of Benjamin

In the closing instructions of Numbers, Yahweh names the men who will apportion inheritance west of the Jordan. Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun lead the work, and one prince from each tribe joins them: "These are the names of the men who will divide the land to you⁺ for inheritance: Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun. And you⁺ will take one prince of every tribe, to divide the land for inheritance" (Num 34:17-18).

The list proceeds tribe by tribe. Judah's representative is Caleb son of Jephunneh, Simeon's is Shemuel son of Ammihud, and then: "Of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chislon" (Num 34:21).

Nothing else about Elidad is recorded — no later action, no genealogy beyond his father's name. He stands in the text only as Benjamin's voice on the commission that turned promised land into allotted territory.
