Elipheleh

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Elipheleh — spelled "Eliphelehu" in the UPDV verse text — is a Levite of the second degree, named among the doorkeepers and harpists assigned when David brought the ark up to Jerusalem.

A Second-Degree Levite

The Chronicler enrolls him in the second-rank list of Levites supporting the chief musicians: "and with them their brothers of the second degree, Zechariah, son, and Jaaziel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehiel, and Unni, Eliab, and Benaiah, and Maaseiah, and Mattithiah, and Eliphelehu, and Mikneiah, and Obed-edom, and Jeiel, the doorkeepers" (1Ch 15:18). His role pairs music with the keeping of the doors — both Levitical functions assigned in this same setting.

Harp Set to the Sheminith

A few verses later he is named among the harpists assigned to lead in a particular tuning: "and Mattithiah, and Eliphelehu, and Mikneiah, and Obed-edom, and Jeiel, and Azaziah, with harps set to the Sheminith, to lead" (1Ch 15:21). The same five-name cluster runs through both notices, fixing his place in the harp-section that led the procession of the ark.
