Ellasar
Ellasar is a city of Chaldea whose king joins the eastern coalition that invades Canaan in the days of Abram. It appears only in Genesis 14, named twice in the same campaign.
Arioch's Coalition
The chapter opens by naming the four eastern kings who march west: "And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim," (Gen 14:1). Arioch represents Ellasar in this four-king alliance.
Four Kings Against Five
When the lines are drawn against the five kings of the plain, the same coalition is repeated in a different order, with Ellasar named again: "against Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar; four kings against the five" (Gen 14:9). The reshuffling of the order signals the battle formation; Ellasar is held inside the same alliance throughout.
