Enos
Enos — also spelled Enosh — is the son of Seth and grandson of Adam, named in the early genealogies of Genesis and Chronicles and in Luke's genealogy of Jesus.
Son of Seth
The first naming gives the form Enosh and ties his birth to the beginnings of public worship: "And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he named him Enosh. Then it was begun to call on the name of [the Speech of] Yahweh" (Gen 4:26). The Sethite line in Genesis 5 gives his lifespan: "And Seth lived 105 years, and begot Enosh: and Seth lived after he begot Enosh 807 years... And Enosh lived ninety years, and begot Kenan. And Enosh lived after he begot Kenan 815 years, and begot sons and daughters: and all the days of Enosh were 905 years: and he died" (Gen 5:6-11).
In Later Genealogies
The opening of Chronicles compresses the same line to its first three names: "Adam, Seth, Enosh" (1Ch 1:1). Luke's genealogy of Jesus traces back through the same figure (using the form Enos): "the [son] of Enos, the [son] of Seth, the [son] of Adam, the [son] of God" (Lu 3:38). Both forms — Enos in Luke, Enosh in Genesis and Chronicles — point to the same man.
