Enumeration

Enumeration is the older word for census — the official numbering of a population for purposes of military service, taxation, or governance. Scripture records several such countings of Israel under Moses and David, the half-shekel poll-tax tied to each numbering, and the imperial enrollment under Caesar that placed Joseph and Mary in Beth-lehem.
