Ephai

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Ephai is named once, and only obliquely — by way of his sons, who appear among the captains of the field forces that came to Gedaliah at Mizpah after the fall of Jerusalem.

The Netophathite Whose Sons Came to Mizpah

The list places his household in the gathering at Gedaliah's seat: "then they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, [to wit,] Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan and Jonathan the sons of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth, and the sons of Ephai the Netophathite, and Jezaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men" (Jer 40:8). Ephai himself is identified only as "the Netophathite" — a man of Netophah — and is heard from no further; the line of sight in the narrative is on his sons, who arrive with their men to swear loyalty to the Babylonian-appointed governor on the eve of the assassination that would scatter the remnant.
