Erastus

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Erastus is a Pauline associate known by two notices in the letters: a civic designation in Romans and a movement-note in 2 Timothy. The two references give complementary glimpses of the same man — settled in Corinth and sharing in the work of Paul's circle.

The Treasurer of the City

In the closing greetings of Romans, Erastus is set among those who send their salutations to the Roman church under a public office: "Gaius my host, and of the whole church, greets you⁺. Erastus the treasurer of the city greets you⁺, and Quartus the brother" (Rom 16:23). He is identified at once by a named municipal post and as a participant in the inter-church exchange.

Stayed at Corinth

In Paul's last letter, Erastus is named in a brief travel-note that locates him at the same city: "Erastus stayed at Corinth: but Trophimus I left at Miletus sick" (2Ti 4:20). The clause pairs his remaining-behind with Trophimus's sick-leaving at Miletus and presents him as a settled-at-Corinth coworker.
