Esek
Esek is the name Isaac gives to a contested well in the Negev, marking a moment of strife between his herdsmen and the herdsmen of Gerar.
A Well Dug by Isaac's Servants
After Isaac's people open a fresh well, the men of Gerar press a counter-claim and dispute its ownership: "And the herdsmen of Gerar strove with Isaac's herdsmen, saying, The water is ours. And he called the name of the well Esek, because they contended with him" (Gen 26:20). The name itself records the quarrel; it preserves the dispute as part of Isaac's wandering and sets up the contrast with the wells that follow.
