Ether

Places · Updated 2026-05-06

Ether is a city of Canaan that appears in the tribal allotment lists. It is first assigned to Judah, then reckoned to Simeon's territory within Judah, and may correspond to the place named Tochen in the Chronicler's parallel village list.

A city of Judah

Ether is named in the southern allotment to Judah, grouped with Libnah and Ashan: "Libnah, and Ether, and Ashan" (Jos 15:42).

Reassigned to Simeon

When Simeon's inheritance is drawn from within Judah, Ether is listed again, this time alongside En-rimmon and Ashan: "En-rimmon, and Ether, and Ashan" (Jos 19:7).

Tochen in the Chronicler

The Chronicler's parallel village list for Simeon names Tochen in the position Ether occupies in Joshua: "And their villages were Etam, and En-Rimmon, and Tochen, and Ashan" (1Ch 4:32). The two lists are bound together by their shared neighbors En-Rimmon and Ashan.
