Evi

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Evi is one of the five Midianite kings put to death in the campaign Moses directed against Midian. He is named only in two verses, both of which list him alongside the same four companions.

Killed in the Midianite Campaign

The roll of Midianite kings slain by Israel sets Evi at the head of the list: "And they slew the kings of Midian with the rest of their slain: Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, the five kings of Midian: Balaam also the son of Beor they slew with the sword" (Nu 31:8). The campaign that ends in Evi's death is the same campaign that ends in Balaam's, and the verse couples the two outcomes.

Recalled Under Sihon's Kingdom

Joshua's allotment notice for the Reubenites reaches back to the same defeat and remembers Evi by name: "and all the cities of the plain, and all the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites, who reigned in Heshbon, whom Moses struck with the chiefs of Midian, Evi, and Rekem, and Zur, and Hur, and Reba, the princes of Sihon, who dwelt in the land" (Jos 13:21). Here the same five names appear again, this time labeled "the chiefs of Midian" and "the princes of Sihon," tying Evi's standing among the Midianites to the Amorite kingdom Moses overthrew.
