Gabbai

Gabbai is named once, in the post-exilic Benjamite roster of those who settled at Jerusalem.

In the Benjamite Roster

The list begins with the chief Benjamite line: "And these are the sons of Benjamin: Sallu the son of Meshullam, the son of Joed, the son of Pedaiah, the son of Kolaiah, the son of Maaseiah, the son of Ithiel, the son of Jeshaiah" (Neh 11:7). Gabbai's name follows directly: "And after him Gabbai, Sallai, nine hundred twenty and eight" (Neh 11:8). The total is the Benjamite count of those settled in Jerusalem after the return. The next verse names the overseers of this Benjamite body: "And Joel the son of Zichri was their overseer; and Judah the son of Hassenuah was second over the city" (Neh 11:9). Gabbai himself receives no further detail in scripture beyond his place in this Benjamite muster.
