Gahar

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Gahar is the head of a family of Nethinim — temple servants — whose descendants return from the Babylonian exile with Zerubbabel. The name appears only inside the return roster, paired closely with Giddel in both surviving lists.

A Family of the Nethinim

The register of returning temple servants in Ezra places Gahar in a tight sequence with Giddel and Reaiah: "the sons of Giddel, the sons of Gahar, the sons of Reaiah," (Ezr 2:47). Nehemiah's parallel roster preserves the same pairing, with Hanan added at the head: "the sons of Hanan, the sons of Giddel, the sons of Gahar," (Ne 7:49). The two lists agree that Gahar's house belongs to the Nethinim contingent of the post-exilic community.
