Galal
Two Levites bear the name Galal, both noted in lists of those settled in Jerusalem and the surrounding villages after the return from exile. The first stands as a Levite among his brothers; the second is identified by his line of descent from Jeduthun, and his name surfaces a second time in Nehemiah's roster of dwellers in Jerusalem.
Galal the Levite
Among the Levites who returned and dwelt in Jerusalem, Chronicles records: "and Bakbakkar, Heresh, and Galal, and Mattaniah the son of Mica, the son of Zichri, the son of Asaph" (1 Ch 9:15). Galal is named without further qualification, simply slotted into the company of Levites in his place.
Galal Son of Jeduthun
The second Galal is named in the same chapter as part of a genealogy: "Obadiah the son of Shemaiah, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun, and Berechiah the son of Asa, the son of Elkanah, who dwelt in the villages of the Netophathites" (1 Ch 9:16). The same line of descent recurs in Nehemiah's list of those who lived in Jerusalem: "Mattaniah the son of Mica, the son of Zabdi, the son of Asaph, who was the chief of praise, he led in prayer, and Bakbukiah, the second among his brothers; and Abda the son of Shammua, the son of Galal, the son of Jeduthun" (Ne 11:17). In both registers Galal stands as the link between Jeduthun and the later Levitical families serving in worship.
