Gareb

Topics · Updated 2026-05-06

The name Gareb belongs both to a man and to a hill. The man is one of David's mighty men, named in the closing roster of the heroes around the king; the hill is a landmark in Jeremiah's vision of the rebuilt Jerusalem, set on the line by which the city's measure runs out.

Gareb the Ithrite — One of David's Mighty Men

In the catalog of David's worthies in 2 Samuel, Gareb is paired with another man of the same clan: "Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite" (2 Sa 23:38). Chronicles preserves the same pairing in identical wording: "Ira the Ithrite, Gareb the Ithrite" (1 Ch 11:40). His ranking among the named warriors is preserved without further detail — the title "the Ithrite" places him in his clan, and the parallel lists confirm the entry.

The Hill Gareb

The second Gareb is a place, fixed by Jeremiah at the boundary of the restored city. In the oracle of rebuilding, the prophet sets the surveyor's line moving outward from the wall: "And the measuring line will go out further straight onward to the hill Gareb, and will turn about to Goah" (Jer 31:39). The hill is named as one of the points the measuring line touches before turning, marking the extent of the restored Jerusalem.
