Gatam

People · Updated 2026-05-06

A grandson of Esau, named in the Edomite genealogies. Gatam is one of the sons of Eliphaz — Esau's firstborn — and is reckoned among the Edomite chiefs whose lines descend from Adah.

Son of Eliphaz, Grandson of Esau

The Genesis genealogy of Esau lists Gatam among the sons born to Eliphaz: "And the sons of Eliphaz were Teman, Omar, Zepho, and Gatam, and Kenaz" (Ge 36:11). Later in the same chapter, the Edomite roll of chiefs descended from Eliphaz includes him by title: "chief Gatam, chief Amalek: these are the chiefs who came of Eliphaz in the land of Edom; these are the sons of Adah" (Ge 36:16).

The Chronicler preserves the same line in his opening genealogies: "The sons of Eliphaz: Teman, and Omar, Zephi, and Gatam, Kenaz, and Timna, and Amalek" (1 Ch 1:36). Across both registers, Gatam stands as one of the founding chiefs of Edom by descent from Esau through Eliphaz.
