Geber

People · Updated 2026-05-06

The name Geber is borne by two of Solomon's twelve commissary officers, both stationed in the Transjordan. One appears under the patronymic "Ben-geber" — son of Geber — and is posted at Ramoth-gilead; the other, "Geber the son of Uri," holds Gilead alone as its sole officer.

Ben-geber at Ramoth-gilead

The roster of Solomon's twelve provisioners places one of them at Ramoth-gilead with a sweeping eastern district: "Ben-geber, in Ramoth-gilead (to him [pertained] the towns of Jair the son of Manasseh, which are in Gilead; [even] to him [pertained] the region of Argob, which is in Bashan, threescore great cities with walls and bronze bars);" (1 Ki 4:13). His territory takes in the Jair-towns in Gilead and the Argob region in Bashan, with its sixty walled cities.

Geber the Son of Uri in Gilead

The same chapter closes the list of officers with a second Geber, set over the old Amorite kingdoms east of the Jordan: "Geber the son of Uri, in the land of Gilead, the country of Sihon king of the Amorites and of Og king of Bashan; and [he was] the only officer who was in the land" (1 Ki 4:19). The narrative emphasizes that this Geber held the land of Gilead as its single commissary.
