Gedor
Gedor names a town in the Judean hill country, a separate valley sought out by Simeonite herdsmen, and several men in the genealogies of Judah and Benjamin. Authorities disagree on whether some of the personal references stand for the town or for an unrelated namesake.
A Town in the Hill Country of Judah
Gedor appears in the Judean town list paired with Halhul and Beth-zur: "Halhul, Beth-zur, and Gedor," (Jos 15:58). The placement among the hill-country towns fixes one Gedor in the mountains of Judah's allotment.
A Gedor Connected with Jeroham
David's Benjamite recruits at Ziklag include "Joelah, and Zebadiah, the sons of Jeroham of Gedor" (1Ch 12:7). The phrase locates Jeroham's family at a place named Gedor.
The Valley of Gedor
A Simeonite expedition pushes outward in search of grazing land: "And they went to the entrance of Gedor, even to the east side of the valley, to seek pasture for their flocks" (1Ch 4:39). Here Gedor marks the threshold of a valley wide enough to feed Simeonite flocks.
A Gedor in the House of Saul
The Benjamite genealogies that converge on Saul list Gedor as a son in the family of Jeiel at Gibeon. The first listing names "Gedor, and Ahio, and Zecher" (1Ch 8:31); the parallel adds further brothers, "Gedor, and Ahio, and Zechariah, and Mikloth" (1Ch 9:37).
Gedor in the House of Judah
Two further notices set Gedor inside Judah's line. Hur's descendants include "Penuel the father of Gedor, and Ezer the father of Hushah. These are the sons of Hur, the firstborn of Ephrathah, the father of Beth-lehem" (1Ch 4:4). A second line traces Gedor through Mered's household: "And his Jewish wife bore Jered the father of Gedor, and Heber the father of Soco, and Jekuthiel the father of Zanoah. And these are the sons of Bithiah the daughter of Pharaoh, whom Mered took" (1Ch 4:18). In both notices Gedor stands alongside other Judahite town-names — Beth-lehem, Soco, Zanoah — which is why authorities differ on whether the genealogies record persons, founder-figures, or the towns they settled.
