Geliloth

Places · Updated 2026-05-06

Geliloth is a boundary-mark on the southern frontier of the tribe of Benjamin, named in Joshua's allotment description and standing opposite the ascent of Adummim.

A Landmark on Benjamin's Southern Border

The Benjaminite border swings up from the Jordan side and is traced past En-shemesh: "and it extended northward, and went out at En-shemesh, and went out to Geliloth, which is across from the ascent of Adummim; and it went down to the stone of Bohan the son of Reuben" (Jos 18:17). Geliloth is fixed in the topography by the ascent of Adummim opposite it and by the stone of Bohan downhill from it.

The Same Line, Read from the Judah Side

The same border is described in the Judah allotment, but the corresponding landmark there is named Gilgal: "and the border went up to Debir from the valley of Achor, and so northward, looking toward Gilgal, that is across from the ascent of Adummim, which is on the south side of the river; and the border passed along to the waters of En-shemesh, and the goings out of it were at En-rogel" (Jos 15:7). The two passages name the same point on the Judah-Benjamin frontier — fixed by the ascent of Adummim and En-shemesh — but read "Geliloth" in the Benjamin description and "Gilgal" in the Judah description.
