Skill in craft and design is treated as a divine gift. The umbrella collects the tabernacle-building texts where wisdom, understanding, and knowledge for fine workmanship are described as filled into the artisan by the Spirit of God.

Wisdom of the Hands

The first signal comes when Moses is told to commission the priestly garments through workers Yahweh himself has equipped: "And you will speak to all who are wise-hearted, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they make Aaron's garments to sanctify him, that he may serve me in the priest's office" (Ex 28:3). Mechanical aptitude is described as something Yahweh "fills" — not native talent only, but a deposit for a sanctuary purpose.

Bezalel and Oholiab

The fullest statement comes with the appointment of the chief artisans. Bezalel of Judah is called by name and "filled... with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship, to devise skillful works, to work in gold, and in silver, and in bronze, and in cutting of stones for setting, and in carving of wood, to work in all manner of workmanship" (Ex 31:3-5). Oholiab of Dan is appointed alongside him, and the same wisdom is placed "in the heart of all who are wise-hearted" so the whole sanctuary inventory — the tent, the ark, the mercy-seat, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the basin, the priestly vestments, and the anointing oil and incense — can be made (Ex 31:6-11).

The second telling reinforces the language: "[the Speech of] Yahweh has called by name Bezalel... And he has filled him with the Spirit of God, in wisdom, in understanding, and in knowledge, and in all manner of workmanship" (Ex 35:30-31). The list of crafts widens to include teaching, engraving, the work of the skilled designer, the embroiderer working in blue, purple, scarlet, and fine linen, and the weaver: "He has filled them with wisdom of heart, to work all manner of workmanship, of the engraver, and of the skillful workman, and of the embroiderer, in blue, and in purple, in scarlet, and in fine linen, and of the weaver, even of those who do any workmanship, and of those who devise skillful works" (Ex 35:35). The capacity to teach the craft is itself part of what is given (Ex 35:34).

Sanctuary Service

The aim of the gift is the sanctuary. As construction begins, the artisans are described in the same terms: "Bezalel and Oholiab will work, and every wise-hearted man, in whom [the Speech of] Yahweh has put wisdom and understanding to know how to work all the work for the service of the sanctuary, according to all that Yahweh has commanded" (Ex 36:1). The skill is given for a defined task; it is exercised under direct command; and the wise-hearted are gathered as a body of workers rather than singled out as solitary geniuses.
