Genubath

People · Updated 2026-05-07

Genubath is the son of Hadad the Edomite, born in Egypt and raised inside the royal household of Pharaoh.

Born in Pharaoh's House

The single mention places him at the intersection of Edomite refuge and Egyptian royalty: "And the sister of Tahpenes bore him Genubath his son, whom Tahpenes weaned in Pharaoh's house; and Genubath was in Pharaoh's house among the sons of Pharaoh" (1Ki 11:20). His mother is the sister of Queen Tahpenes; his father, Hadad, had fled Edom as a child and married into the Egyptian court. Genubath is weaned by the queen herself and grows up among Pharaoh's own sons — a foreign prince inside the palace whose lineage prepares the later return of his father as an adversary against Solomon.
