Ginath

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Ginath is named only as the father of Tibni, the failed claimant who divided Israel against Omri after the death of Zimri.

Father of Tibni

When the kingdom split between two contenders, Ginath's son led one of the factions: "Then the people of Israel were divided into two parts: half of the people followed Tibni the son of Ginath, to make him king; and half followed Omri" (1Ki 16:21). The contest was decided in Omri's favor, but Ginath is named again as the dynasty fails: "But the people who followed Omri prevailed against the people who followed Tibni the son of Ginath: so Tibni died, and Omri reigned" (1Ki 16:22). His name is preserved only in the patronymic that fixes which Tibni is meant.
