Glede
The glede appears once in scripture, named in the catalogue of unclean birds Israel is forbidden to eat.
A Forbidden Bird
In the dietary list of Deuteronomy 14, the glede is set among the carnivorous and scavenging birds Israel must not consume. After the eagle, the gier-eagle, and the osprey, the text continues: "and the glede, and the falcon, and the kite after its kind" (Deut 14:13). The verse stands within a longer roster of forbidden birds (Deut 14:11-18) that includes raptors, owls, and waders alike — birds of prey and scavengers grouped together by their feeding habits rather than by ornithological family.
