Guest-Chamber

Topics · Updated 2026-05-08

The term guest-chamber in UPDV refers to a designated room set apart for honored guests or for formal communal meals. Samuel uses one when he receives Saul: "Samuel took Saul and his attendant, and brought them into the guest-chamber, and made them sit in the chiefest place among those who were invited, who were about thirty persons" (1Sa 9:22).

The same word recurs in Jesus' instructions to his disciples before the Passover. He tells them to ask the owner of a house in Jerusalem: "Where is my guest-chamber, where I will eat the Passover with my disciples?" (Mk 14:14). UPDV uses guest-chamber in both passages where older versions read "parlor" (1 Samuel) or "guest room" (Mark).
