Gur

Places · Updated 2026-05-07

Gur is a Palestinian locator named in a single narrative incident: the place on the road near Ibleam where Jehu's men struck Ahaziah king of Judah during Jehu's purge of the house of Omri.

The ascent of Gur

After the killing of Joram in the field of Naboth, Ahaziah of Judah flees toward the garden-house and is overtaken on the road. The text fixes the location by an ascent: "But when Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this, he fled by the way of the garden-house. And Jehu followed after him, and said, 'Him too. Kill him.' [This happened] in the chariot at the ascent of Gur, which is by Ibleam. And he fled to Megiddo, and died there" (2Ki 9:27). Gur is identified by its proximity to Ibleam and by the rising grade of road on which the chariot was struck; from there the wounded king is able to reach Megiddo before dying.
