Habakkuk

People · Updated 2026-05-06

Habakkuk is named in the UPDV only twice — once as the prophet whose burden the book records, and once at the head of the prayer that closes it. Both notices use the same title, and the second adds a musical instruction.

The Prophet's Burden

The book opens by naming Habakkuk and his vision-burden in a one-line superscription: "The burden which Habakkuk the prophet saw" (Hab 1:1). The single-clause heading does the whole job of placing the book under his name.

The Prayer of Habakkuk

The third chapter opens with the prophet's name a second time, this time over a prayer with a musical rubric: "A prayer of Habakkuk the prophet, set to Shigionoth" (Hab 3:1). The same "Habakkuk the prophet" formula recurs, now attached to the closing-chapter prayer rather than the opening burden.
