Hadattah

Places · Updated 2026-05-07

Hadattah appears once in the southern allotment list of Judah, joined to Hazor as a single compound place name. The element functions as a qualifier — "new Hazor" — and is not separated from Hazor in the verse that names it.

Hazor-hadattah in Judah's southern list

The south-of-Judah catalogue runs through Kedesh, Hazor of Ithnan, Ziph, Telem, and Bealoth before reaching the compound: "and Hazor-hadattah, and Kerioth-hezron (the same is Hazor)" (Jos 15:25). The name occurs only here and only in this bound form, identifying a Hazor distinguished from neighboring Hazor-named sites — the Hazor of Ithnan two verses earlier (Jos 15:23) and the Kerioth-hezron parenthetically equated with Hazor in the same verse.
