Hammath

Hammath is a fortified city of the tribe of Naphtali, listed once in the allotment lists of Joshua.

When the inheritance of Naphtali is described, the text enumerates the strongholds of the tribe by name. Hammath stands among them: "And the fortified cities were Ziddim, Zer, and Hammath, Rakkath, and Chinnereth" (Jos 19:35). The verse places Hammath in a chain of walled towns running along the western shore of the Sea of Chinnereth, but supplies no further account of its history. Its scriptural place is fixed by this single inventory of Naphtali's defenses.
