Hanes

Places · Updated 2026-05-07

Hanes is a city in Egypt named once in scripture — and named not as a destination of pilgrimage or trade but as a marker of failed political alliance. Isaiah's oracle against the Judean envoys who travel south to seek Pharaoh's help locates them in two named centers, Zoan and Hanes, both well inside Egypt.

A Place in Egypt

The verse pairs Hanes with another Egyptian center to fix the location of a Judean diplomatic mission: "For their princes are at Zoan, and their ambassadors have come to Hanes" (Isa 30:4). The two named cities mark how far the embassy has traveled — princes at Zoan, ambassadors as far as Hanes. The single attestation is enough to fix Hanes as one terminus of that southward journey.
