A Descendant of Caleb

The Chronicler's catalog of Caleb's line uses the formula "X the father of Y" to mark settlement-founders rather than biological fathers in the narrow sense — each named man stands behind the population of a particular town. Hareph closes a paired entry of this type: "Salma the father of Beth-lehem, Hareph the father of Beth-gader" (1 Ch 2:51). His significance in the text is the place that traces its origin to him; nothing else of his life is recorded.
